Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) male. He appears to be eating a tuber from Yellow Lotus (Nelumbo lutea: Nelumbonaceae). Though not visible during the winter months, Yellow Lotus carpets Shoveler pond in mid-summer.
Habitat
Shoveler pond, freshwater marsh with open water surrounded by coastal prairie and marshes at ca. 1 m (3.3) ft elevation.
Location
Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, southwest of Winnie, Chambers County, Texas, USA.
