Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris)

I'd thought the Hummers were all gone for the season but this lovely juvie showed up the other day and entertained me for a bit. They really love the salvia and this particular plant is called Salvia 'Wendy's Wish'. I quite love the color of this and it's bloomed non stop since the spring. I always plant the gardens with plenty of salvias, fuchsias and cupheas for the Hummingbirds.

This shot was taken at ISO500, F6.3 and 1/3200. Even at that shutter speed that wing tip is still a bit blurred. Incredible birds! I just love that you can see the flowers through that delicate wing.

A fantastic capture. I like the lovely pattern of the shiny feathers on its back and it's great to see the pink flowers through the extended wing.

Are the hummers officially gone and if not how are they keeping warm, its gotten really cold at night and not much nectar left? o:D

What an extraordinary image. Brilliantly timed and absolutely beautiful. I agree about the translucent wing. It reminds me of the model planes I made as a boy, with tissue paper stretched over the framework. Brilliant work Deanne.

Sorry, D. For some reason I swore I posted to this image...but alas, I didn't??? Oh well, I'd post twice anyway. Amazing shot. I long for a Hummer/flower shot in my gallery. Beautifully caught, Deanne!
