Ruddy Duck
Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline (Oakland, CA, USA) at about 25m.

I think I've seen a Ruddy one other time, but also at a fair distance away. We may be seeing them more often than that but mistaking them for grebes with the naked eye at these kinds of distances.

Yes.... I can see how that could be Kevin. I think you'd need to be used to seeing both, to work them out at distances, especially in poor light!

You've a super picture of this one - thanks very much for sharing him with us.

Yeah, sometimes I blindly take photos with "what's that?" or "not sure what that is, take a photo and figure it out when we get home" in mind. Between the distance and the EVF on the camera it is sometimes too tough to tell in the field.

If I wasn't so intent on the photo, I could get the binoculars out and probably figure it out, but then I might miss the photo. I'll probably always be the photographer first though. :)

That's okay, I like the surprises I get when I process my photos...new birds, photos I though would be horrible turn-out great, etc.

Excellent profile of this small duck Kevin. Beautiful little ducks with great character. Fantastic!!!
