Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus)

Taken while on a boat on the Daintree river. These Kingfishers are mis-named as they are not fishing birds at all. As you can see his beak is very muddy from digging around in the muddy riverbank looking for crabs etc.

Pretty light on this beauty Julien...Not doubting your word at all, but are you sure it hasn't been nest building with the dirt on its bill?

All birds should be called 'Sacred' ;)
 
brilliant bird and capture.super info to love that beak and it could scoop fish up with that but i read a little on them and their diet does consist of other food.so you see and watch them i never see these beauties.all the best margaret.
