Sage Thrasher
Present here since 8 February, this is a rare, local winter visitor from breeding areas in the Great Basin. This species was originally called the Mountain Mockingbird by Townsend who collected the first specimen. In fact recent DNA studies show that this species is more closely related to mockingbirds (genus Mimus) than to thrashers (genus Toxostoma).
Location
Merced, California, USA.
