I took it at St Ives, Huntingdonshire on the quayside. Sand Martins have a habit of nesting in old cast iron drainage pipes set into the quayside walls and the bridge itself. They fly at a great rate of knots directly into the pipe opening; far too quickly for me to capture. The only way for me to photograph the bird was to focus on the pipe opening after the bird has entered and then start firing bursts of shots almost immediately. One may never be exactly sure when the bird will emerge. I cant remember how many shots I took, but there were a lot; with one and a half successes. Fortunately, my wife came out of the shop and dragged me away or I might still be there.
