Sandhill Crane Family 2008

Sandhill Crane Family 2008 (Grus canadensis)

The nest site that a family of sandhill cranes had been using from 2002-2007 was not used in 2008. However, I did find 2 new nests at least. (There was probably a third one about a quarter of a mile out in the swamp).

This family nested about 50 yards from the parking lot. They are amazingly tolerant of humans.

Very nice shot, it's great to see a little one, hard to believe he will get so big.

Very nice. I wonder if the SHCs that come through Oregon are a different variant. The ones I see are gray with the red topknot. Ah, a quick check reveals I see them only in winter Plumage! Brown. How nice!
