Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao macao)

One of a pair foraging in the crown of a fruiting tree. This spectacular species of lowland forests and gallery woodland is said to be scarce and declining but considered to be of "least concern" by IUCN because it is still doing well in remote areas away from human population centers. The similar Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) has red facial lines and more green in its wings. Where both occur, Scarlet is more common along river edges. Scarlet has two subspecies. This is the nominate race characterized by green tips to its blue median coverts. Sexes are alike.
