Second Spoonie

Second Spoonie (Platalea ajaja)

and a much closer viewing than my first. I'm not sure why this one was on his own, tucked away in a quiet corner. There was a whole "bouquet" of them on a sandbar in the next lagune. Perhaps this one didn't feel welcome among them ...? And, is "bouquet" the collective word for spoonbills? If not, and if there is no collective word for them yet, I recommend it, at least for the roseates. I'll share a shot of the bouquet later. Oh, and one last question: What does its name "ajaja" come from etymologically. Most likely it's from somebody's name, but it's cute when read through Norwegian eyes as it looks like one Norwegian expression for OMG (aiaiai or ajajaj, pronounced I-I-I) - and they are OMG-gorgeous, especially when seen in a whole bouquet ;)

A group of spoonbills has several collective nouns, including a "canteen" or "measurement" of spoonbills.

However Edward Lears poetry is clearly the inspiration behind the creation of this collective noun for describing a group of Spoonbills. Not only did he invent the word but his sketch of the Dolomphious Duck with her runcible spoon looks remarkably similar to a Spoonbill. Other terms that are in use include a canteen, a service and a sedge but after seeing this sketch I think my favourite has to be runcible.

Garnered from Google.

That was fun looking them up LOL

Aren't spoonies great Ann, a lovely pose you got here lass.
