Sharing with the ground crew (Periparus ater)

Has anybody else noticed this behavior? My Mom used a seed mix in her feeder and noted that the birds at the feeder tended to toss certain types of seeds "overboard" and that others again (for instance, the towhees) fed on those toss-outs down on the ground. But this feeder is filled with only sunflower seeds. Yet here too, I've noticed that some birds are picky. While the green finches and nuthatches fill up a cropfull before taking off, and the blue tits and great tits grab a quick seed and then fly somewhere else to open it, the coal tits toss out seed after seed before picking the one they'll fly away with. Do they do that elsewhere as well?

So interesting what you're observing Ann. I'm not really seeing that (don't get much in the way of finches here anyway). Sometimes my coalie will take a seed and hold it in his feet to eat, other times he'll just grab and fly off to the tree to (I presume) eat it.

My Blue Tit usualy just grabs and runs too.

You did time that shot well, didn't you to catch the falling seed. (hmm... that reminds me of a song LOL).

I put feeders out filled with white sunflower seeds for my goldfinches. They toss quite a lot of them out onto the ground. The doves and woodpigeons and sometimes a chaffinch feed on the "toss outs". The tits tend to grab one, hold it between their feet to eat and then take off.
A brilliant capture, Doc !!! Thanks for sharing.

Three great up loads Ann. I've noticed several species will sort through the seeds to find their favourites.

I guess its like us picking through produce at the market (lol)! The ones that come after us get the culls. I have noticed that myself how picky some birds are. Excellent work Doc!!!!
