Sharp Shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus)

A sharpie struggling with a Mourning Dove right below our living room window. As the dove is only slightly smaller than the hawk, I thought the struggle might go on for some time, or the dove might escape. But it didn't last long as the dove succumbed quickly. The hawk must have been ravenous, he dined on the dove right on the spot. Unusual as they typically dispatch the victim, then take it somewhere private for eating. I took a bunch of photos as the "meal" progressed but probably won't post those as it might upset some people.

That's a wonderful picture Bill.... with some really lovely plumage detail.

They sound a bit like our Sparrowhawks, though they are inclined to eat at the kill spot, unless they're disturbed.

Excellent work here my friend. Many thanks lad.

In that ind of cold, I'm sure it was quite hungry and no time to go elsewhere. A great moment to capture Bill!
