Flying Jewel (Calothorax lucifer)

We had parent-teacher's conferences until late on Thursday night, so they gave us Friday afternoon off. Couldn't think of a better place to spend it than Ash Canyon with the hummingbirds. I was lucky to see our rare visitor from Mexico - the Lucifer Hummingbird a number of times. This flight shot shows his small size ~ 3.5 inches, one of the smallest we get here.
The Huachuca Mountains in Southeast Arizona, a small area in Texas, and possibly the New Mexico boarder are about the only places these are seen in the U.S.
Habitat
Supposedly found in the desert with Agave plants, the oaks of Ash Canyon have been home to at least one the last few years.
Location
Ash Canyon B&B, Hereford, Arizona
Date taken
April 4, 2008
Scientific name
Calothorax lucifer
Equipment used
Canon 20D with 100-400mm Lens
Well caught, a beauty of a shot:clap:

I hope to catch a few of the same when I visit Mexico in the Summer:t:
