Hummingbird Moth, The Imposter! (hemaris thysbe)

When my husband and I first spotted these in our yard 2 years ago, we thought perhaps they were baby hummingbirds. It took several months to find out what they were. They are a colorful, fanciful addition to our garden.

They gather nectar from our butterfly bush, which also attracts hummingbirds, as well as several species of butterflies.

If you don't have a butterfly bush in your yard, get one! They are beautiful, fragrant, grow quickly, and attract the most beautiful creatures.

I have a Nikon D-70, but I have found that my little Kodak works much better with these speedy little creatures who flit from one place to another without stopping to rest.
