Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline, Arrowhead Marsh (Oakland, CA, USA) at around 2m.

This is a near-threatened species native to the area. Usually quite shy and tough to spot, we lucked upon this one out in the open. What a wonderful opportunity!

We've discovered that the traditional advice to spot these birds is entirely wrong, at least for this population. So we're getting pretty good at finding opportunities to photograph them.

This is the second of two shots I chose from this outing, since it shows a really nice view of the wing feathers.
