Red-knobbed Coot

Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata)

During the breeding season the adults develop two dark red knobs at the top of the frontal shield. In the non-breeding season these are reduced in size and not as brightly colored. Otherwise they are similar to the Eurasian Coot (F. atra). The knobs may be reduced and are not always obvious in the field. Note that the black feathering between the shield and the bill is more rounded, compared to Eurasian Coot where it comes to an acute angled point.

They're quite attractive coots, with that red knob and pretty eye too.

A grand job you've done here Joe - very well done laddie.

A well detailed portrait and pretty water, Joseph.
