Spiny-backed Orbweaver
Spiny-backed Orbweaver/Crab-like Spiny Orbweaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis: Araneidae) Female. Species is quite variable in coloration. Sexes told by size, male is much smaller. Carapace is wider than long. Females 10-13 mm (0.39-0.51 in) wide by 5-9 mm (0.20-0.35 in) long. Males are only 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 in) long and barely wider than long.
Habitat
Urban setting. Fence row with Peppervine (Ampelopsis arborea: Vitaceae). Floodplain of Carter Creek at ca. 88 m (289 ft) elevation.
