Band-tailed Earthcreeper (Ochetorhynchus phoenicurus)

The rusty band at the base of the tail shows well in this image. This Furnarid was considered to be an Argentine endemic until a small population was discovered in the Patagonian Steppes of extreme Eastern Chile just north of the Strait of Magellan. We detected this individual by its distinctive trilling song. It was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Eremobius but now moved to the genus Ochetorhynchus based on new genetic data.
