Great Golden Digger Wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus)

My insect classification skills are rather wanting, but I think this is a Great Golden Digger Wasp.

Taken in the Alan Chadwick garden at UC Santa Cruz.

Nikon Z7 with 500mm f/5.6e shot at 1/2000, f/5.6, ISO 360. Cropped down to 1.1MP (6.7x crop) for equivalent focal length of 3328mm.

That's a cracking picture you've taken of this wasp, with some exceptional detail.

These beautiful wasps usually show up in my neck of the woods in July but I have only seen a single one so for this year. Always a treat to see these gems. TFS Marc!
