Red Breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)

Frozen in place, not a twitch. I was close enough I could have reached up and tickled its belly and I wonder if it would have moved. There were other birds around the yard, un-moving. Still as statues. I suspect a hawk was nearby, but couldn't see anything.

Yeah.... I've had the same experience many times Bill... it usually does mean there's a hawk nearby, or they've heard a warning issued of some predator or other. Best not to frighten them into moving.

You've a super picture of this 'statue' Bill - a great job to get a picture without frightening him off too.
