Gray Heron

Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea cinerea)

I suspect this individual is not fully adult. It lacks ornamental plumes on its nape and neck. Note also white down feathers at the base of its pale yellow bill. It also lacks the strong black neck markings of adults The larger Great Blue Heron of the Americas is similar but has narrower black crown stripes and usually, but not always, chestnut-brown flanks and thighs.
Location

Date taken
15 July 2018

That's a grand picture you've taken of this heron Joe. Think I'm rather inclined to agree that it's probably a youngster, but I'm leaning towards the sub-adult end.

Excellent work here lad and well noticed too. Think we're so used to seeing them we forget to look at the 'details'.
