Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo carbo)

These tanagers were fairly common along the rivers. Overall color varies with subspecies. This is the dark nominate race, males of which often look all black from a distance. Male plumage is deep red velvet, decidedly darker than the female. The striking enlarged silver-colored mandible gives this species its name.
Location
Rio Maraon, Iquitos Creek, Nauta, Loreto, Peru
Date taken
14 June 2019
Scientific name
Ramphocelus carbo carbo
Equipment used
Canon PowerShot SX60 HS
A bird that varies from stunningly beautiful to "just black drab" depending on the individual lighting and the individual bird. Your picture shows the beginning of the red velvet phase.
Good job!
