Many thanks to you all for your kind words! Good question, zone8848: the heron was indeed very close when I took this, but of its own volition -- no photo justifies disturbing wildlife, and as usual I had positioned myself at a respectful distance at first and remained stationary, but the heron was so intent on hunting that it approached within a few metres without paying me any attention.
 
A really stunning shot. I love the graduation of colour/tones in the background and the superb clarity of the bird with its catch. Great work :t:
