Note the bright red cere and lores. This uncommon raptor is a "sit-and-wait" predator easily overlooked when concealed on a perch within the forest. Ranging widely through secluded backwaters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, its nest remains completely unknown. This species resembles the Plumbeous Hawk which replaces it west of the Andes. In the past both were placed in the genus Leucopternis and sometimes lumped together as one species. However, despite their similarity the two are apparently not very closely related and are now classified in different genera.
