Slow and steady (Testudo graeca)

Today I had to take a "personal break" out in the sand dunes. When I was done and headed back to the road, I saw this tortoise nibbling on some dune grass a few yards ahead of me. I froze stock still and started taking photos. Soon the tortoise set out slowly walking ... towards me. I kept my feet absolutely still and continued tracking and snapping away. Eventually I was bent over taking photos back between my own feet :eek!: The tortoise didn't seem to have even noticed I was there, except as just another inanimate obstacle to dodge around.
We think this is a Spur-thighed Tortoise, but I'll check on that with the guides in the morning. I haven't shown them the photos yet.

How lovely to see one of these in the wild... and it seems to have been a memorable encounter too Ann.

A great image. Sleep well lass.

A great find, Doc! I've never seen a wild tortoise though I once found a skeleton in Greece.
