Small Tortoiseshell (nymphalis urticae) (Nymphalis urticae)

Spotted in a seashore environment on one of the few sunny days this month. Only available lens was a 500mm F4 Canon EF - I had been shooting a female Merganser and chick prior to this - so the shot had to be taken from a few metres away.
Habitat
Seashore
Location
Nr Inverkip, Clyde Estuary
Date taken
8/8/2008
Scientific name
Nymphalis urticae
Equipment used
Canon 40D, 500mm f4 lens
Great composition on this one. Nice rising diagonal line. Really pretty background colours, too.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind comments. All I had to do to this image was crop the original and turn it 180 degrees to get the composition. The "lovely colour" in the background was provided by a rather scruffy footpath. It's a prime example of looking at your originals to try and see a composition within the picture.

Just found your beautiful shot by chance, Tom!!! I think it is a little marvel of composition, simple and magnificent at the same time, great job!!! :t:  :loveme:
