Snow Bunting
A striking rarity found by Chris Hayward. This appears to be the fourth acceptable record for San Mateo County and the first in over 20 years. Aging and sexing Snow Buntings is tricky because of the similarity of immature males to females. This is presumably the highly migratory widespread nominate race. Formerly classified with other buntings in the Emberizidae, Snow Buntings are now placed in a new family, the Calcariidae along with the Longspurs based on a molecular study by Alström et al. (2008).
