Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl (Nyclea scandiaca)

Snowy owls periodically find they way down in to NY and other northern states in the US. These owls usually spend their winters in upper Canada and their summers further north yet, but come down in small numbers sometimes, looking for food sources. This year we have had 3 Snowys that have taken up residence in an open fields community about 30 miles north of where I live. But now we have one that has found it's way to an area that is about 15 minutes from my house. This one is inhabiting and hunting in fields that surround a small developement nearby and spends much of its times sitting on telephone poles surveying the fields. In the same area we have been seeing Short-eared Owls also but they are harder to get photos of because they come out to hunt as dusk approaches and so far the light has been too dim for photos while they have been there, so I will have to settle for the snowy for now!!
