Some cones are hard to reach (Nucifraga caryocatactes)

I think also that, as the cones ripen, the stems become too hard for the Nutcrackers to peck through. Or maybe just that the cones as a whole are less appealing as they ripen and harden. Anyway, a few cones got left for the tree to seed, or for other birds, or for the squirrels... But this guy hadn't given up yet.
