Southern grey Shrike (Lanius meridionalis)

The southern grey shrike (Lanius meridionalis) is a member of theshrike family. The plumage is generally similar to great grey shrike apart from the differences noted below. It is closely related to the great grey shrike, Lanius excubitor, which it was previously considered conspecific; where they co-occur, they do not interbreed and are separated by choice of habitat.
It is slightly smaller and darker than the great grey shrike, and prefers dry open country. 2425 cm; 4893 g (mostly 5070 g). A rather large shrike with fairly long tail. Male nominate race has black facial mask from lores narrowly through eye.
Sometimes it split as a separate species, the steppe grey shrike, L. pallidirostis.
This medium-sized passerinebird eats large insects, smallbirds and rodents.
Wide variety of calls. Repeated double kwi-rick, sheenk-sheenk or shihk-shihk.[info:wikipedia]
