Southern Royal Albatross

Southern Royal Albatross (Diomedia epomophora)

Besides that narrow dark streak along the mandible edges, our guide on the pelagic (but not my field guide) mentioned that the Southern Royals have a dark crease or streak behind the eye. The field guide also points to their bills being "huge" (as opposed to merely "large", which is what the book says of Wanderers' and Northern Royals' bills). Finally, though the book says Wanderers are the "whitest of all albatrosses", that's not really true of females or juveniles (as the book shows and I'll illustrate later) and even adult males seem to me to kind of overlap with Southern Royals when it comes to how much white they show. All in all, I won't be embarrassed if someone challenges my Wanderer and Southern Royal IDs, but for now I'm showing them according to what my guides - living and printed - have led me to believe.
