Spirit of the woods. Woodcock. (Scolopax rusticola.)

I was fortunate enough to get some super views of this shy bird when I visited Titchwell in Norfolk last week. You only knew it was there when that big eye opened and betrayed it's presence. Just a few yards beyond the car park in amongst the undergrowth and loose vegetation. It was hard to know where the ground ended and the bird began! How can you describe to some-one the detail and design of the cryptic plumage and the way evolution has perfected such camouflage? I have found it very challenging to do any kind of justice to this creature in paint! I just sloshed the water and pigment across the paper in a vain attempt to convey my feelings after this encounter! I hope you will all forgive me?
