Spotted towhee completely unconcerned about me... (Pipilo maculatus)

I'm repairing some flood damage in a home in the Mt. Baker area, less than two miles from my place, and as I'm taking tools in from the truck I pass this male spotted towhee and he's not the least bit afraid of me as I walk within two feet of him. From talking to the homeowner and her neighbors I know these beautiful birds are plentiful in this neighborhood and I'm envious because I don't think I've ever seen one on Beacon Hill.

I love these guys. I bought my first field guide to ID them. I bought it in an antique store; a 1936 (?) Peterson. It was called a Rufous-sided Towhee in the book.

Do you still have that book? Could be worth a lot. Not that I'd consider selling it.

Yes, I do. I have a few older field guides. Even though the names have changed on many birds, the books aren't worthless. Some have nest and egg information and comments not found in many of the newer books. I confess, I rarely look at them; but I wouldn't want to give them up. I usually use my Sibley's at home (So. CA) and whatever I have for other countries; and the net. For example, I'm in Mexico right now, so I'm using Steve N.G. Howell and Sophie Webb's, A Guide To The Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America. I do a lot of looking online when I am confused about something.
