Sunda Frog Mouth (Batrachostomus cornutus)

This comical looking bird occurs on Borneo and Sumatra. It is found in lowland, the forest edge and plantations. it is a nocturnal species. However, this one was spotted snoozing in a tree during the day.

A stunning shot of this rare frogmouth! May I assume that this is the brown-and-buff morph (wonderful colours, by the way)? Also, do you know the age, sex or subspecies of this individual? (I'm eyeing it for Sunda Frogmouth - BirdForum Opus.)

That really is an excellent picture Mala!! Though he does look awful fierce for a small owl LOL.

Many thanks for sharing it with us - I see Karol (@01101001) has his eye on it for uploading to the Opus article. I think I've found the answer to part of his question - it's the nominate subspecies in Sabah (I'll let him know).

This is the bornean Sunda Frogmouth female, males are usually more greyish in color. She is at least 4 years old as she has been seen often with her mate but since a year seen alone. sorry for the late reply, been in the field.
