Suprise!!!! (Colaptes auratus)

Had a great birdy day out in the hide yesterday and in particular there were quite a few woodies about. I saw all my residents including both male and female Downys, Hairys and Red-bellied. I'd not seen the Northern Flicker in a bit and was so pleased to see him back again. I was very happy with how long he stayed at the suet and got quite a few shots in before he flew off. Well then he came back again and stayed for quite a while again. I thought I had one hungry bird there!

Imagine my surprise when I opened the files later and realized that I had not one but two different Male Northern Flickers around. Now I just would love to see some girls!

I thought you'd like to see the comparison between the two different birds. I was quite surprised at the difference in the amount of red on the head as well as the beak shapes.

Fantastic shots of these two Deanne, a most handsome woodpecker species. Had a look on "All about birds" and see there are Red or Black barred varieties also.

Wow ! A great composition this, Deanne  :t: ! Terrific shots and great being able to compare these two males and see the differences !!!

Fantastic shot Dean and I've been looking at your image for a while and only noticed the colour on its neck a bit different than the other.

Is there any difference to tell ? Hehehe

Outstanding detail, color, and exposure..
An excellent side by side presentation:t::t:
