Suprise!!!! (Colaptes auratus)

Had a great birdy day out in the hide yesterday and in particular there were quite a few woodies about. I saw all my residents including both male and female Downys, Hairys and Red-bellied. I'd not seen the Northern Flicker in a bit and was so pleased to see him back again. I was very happy with how long he stayed at the suet and got quite a few shots in before he flew off. Well then he came back again and stayed for quite a while again. I thought I had one hungry bird there!

Imagine my surprise when I opened the files later and realized that I had not one but two different Male Northern Flickers around. Now I just would love to see some girls!

I thought you'd like to see the comparison between the two different birds. I was quite surprised at the difference in the amount of red on the head as well as the beak shapes.

Beautiful pair of males, D! I love how the differences become obvious when placed side by side. Can't wait to see some this year. ;)

As always, goreous captures! :t:

Amazing range of subtle colours! Immaculate and natural sharpness! Lends justice to these beauties. Congratulations, Deanne!

I've just come across this one now. Good for you for noticing the difference! Both great shots of Flickers - a bird that I have never managed to get a decent shot of.
