Tailless Chickadee

Tailless Chickadee

Usually chickadees have relatively long tail feathers. Not this guy, he has none. Strange time of year for a moult. My thought is that he might have escaped a predator by sacrificing that tail. As chickadees go, this one is very shy and stays hidden a lot. Most are bold and don't mind my presence. Really tough to get a decent shot of him.

Hope he manages to get through to the spring and another moult Bill. I'm sure you'll soon have him settled down... feeding out of your hand one day too;)

A lovely picture - and tale... gettit?

Stanley is right, that tail does come in handy. I've got a sparrow without a tail but he's just as mean to the others as he's always been. Don't worry about your dee, he'll do fine.

I believe that they know when they are easier prey when they are injured like this. I suspect a cat grabbing its tail. Nicely captured Bill.
