Texas Rat Snake up a tree! (Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri)

This is the same dead tree which had Wood Ducks and Black-bellied Whistling-ducks on it, in my last post 3 days ago. Rat snakes are non-venomous and are really good climbers - we've seen them climb a vertical brick wall with no problem! One night a few years ago, one managed to climb up a veranda support pole, to raid an old swallow nest, which was being used by a pair of House Finches. We did not hear anything until it was too late.
Habitat
Post Oak savannah
Location
South Central Texas
Date taken
12 May 2020
Scientific name
Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri
Equipment used
Nikon Coolpix P900
Yikes! Interesting narrative, Helen. Shame about the house finch nest being plundered.

Looks nothing like our Rat Snake. This one is more colorful. Nicely illustrated Helen and sorry to hear about the Finches.

Lol, maybe this is the reason the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks did not want to nest. Excellent capture and picture Helen! TFS!

A shame, I guess the birds have no defence against these snakes!!

That's a terrific picture to get Helen, with a great explanatory narrative too. Thanks lass.
