A Female Northern (yellow-shafted) Flicker arrives, literally, with flying colors. I watched it fly from tree to tree before it flew straight past me, peeked into a vacant hole in a tree, and then flew on. The Eastern North American subspecies, Colaptes auratus auratus, is yellow under the tail and underwings and have yellow shafts on their primaries.
