I'm no expert, but guessing the over-exposure is something to do with the dark background. If you've the chance to mess about, try changing the EV settings (the extent of my knowledge!)
I think you are right Delia, I had to hide behind a tree as they are crafty blighters as well, only take the food when I am well out the way unlike the seafront when they literally come sit next to you
