After a bit of time at the hide, we drove back out to the main road, across the bridge to the north side of the river, and then along some farm roads to a preserve on the north side. From there, looking back towards the industrial area, we could see vast masses of (mainly Pink-footed) geese on the river, on the sandbanks, and now and then whole clouds of them flying up as well as smaller groups taking off to feed in nearby fields or continue their migration and other groups still arriving or returning from the fields. Definitely not a "wild goose chase" in the metaphorical sense of the phrase.
