The Monegros in the Ebro valley was once a vast area home to sandgrouse, bustards and larks. It is one of the most arid regions in Spain, if we ignore rapidly encroaching irrigation.
Yes, I'm afraid you did misunderstand - what's bad is not that it is a desert (it has been so for a long time now and that's why the bustards, sandgrouse and larks started living there) but rather that this unique habitat is being destroyed by transformation into irrigated land (transgenic maize, fruit trees, etc.) with a lot of European funding and for a very small human population. Well, I think it's a great shame anyway, as where else in Europe can you see landscapes like this one, and some of the rest that I will send in the future?
