The Poser (Sturnus vulgaris)

This bird has been endlessly entertaining recently as it's decided to make use of one of the bird houses in the garden. It perches on top of the finial and goes into an elaborate display with wing flapping and throwing it's head back and singing it's heart out, such as it's song is. It is a series of whistles, shrieks and odd sounds. I'm sure it's potential mate finds it alluring but it just makes me laugh.

It is such a shame that these birds are a nuiscance here. Many detest them as, like another problem import, House Sparrows, they compete with our native cavity nesting birds and our native birds numbers are suffering as a result.

That being said, it isn't the birds' fault that they are here, it is the fault of the humans, who now detest them, for bringing them here to begin with. An unfortunate situation.

I can't do a thing about the problems of introduced species but I can and do admire the beauty of this pretty bird and enjoy its antics.

Wow, wow, wow!!! o:) This is making art of the not-always-seen beauty of the smart Starling, Deanne!!! Super-mega-extra-ultra admirable portrait, I'm in awe, g/f!!!!

This is without doubt a cracking shot Deanne.

Agree not the bird's fault for being an introduced species. Many on this side of the pond love them and they can be great mimicking birds too. I know a starling that does great curlew and oyster catcher calls. They also provide one of natures greatest spectacles when they are in flocks; and invidual birds can be very comical and easy to approach. When I was a boy fishing I had one that use to land on me.

Well Deanne you might be reassured to know they can be just as much of a nuiscance over here when they want to be. But as you say they can eqaully be just as entertaining, when they squabble it's a real hoot. Speaking of which, listen closely to them as they are infamous mimcs and can do all kinds of other bird impressions, I've heard my ones do a spot on impersonation of the local Tawny Owl!

Brilliant capture of one of our more characterful exports BTW. :t:

This is superb Deanne, everything about it is perfect,
another for my favourites,thanks! :t:

An excellent portrait of this lovely male starling, superb detail, great pose - and the background is absolutely spot - on. Yes they are regarded as pests here too - sad isn't it.
