I was following this guy through the gardens, refusing to show himself properly until his red eye caught something in the trees above him

or he thought he was a bittern lol, excellent photo of this red-eyed beauty, Max, love it, many tfs!!
 
That's a great shot and it also captures what seems to be a feature of all coucals - their liking for lounging about behind foliage.
