They will survive.. (Poecile atricapillus)

As I was driving on a rarely used side road, I was very surprised to see the scene before me, not because of the deer skeleton(altho I DID make sure it wasn't human!!) since unfortunately there are hunters in the area, but to see the Chickadees and other small birds having a feast of carrion, that amazed me! It gave me hope for their survival in case I'm not around to feed them! ;) Anyone else see anything like this? I didn't see anything in Opus about their feeding habits, or do all birds have a taste for meat since they love the fat balls?

Super capture Lindy, it could be that if birds are that hungry, they will change their feeding habits to account for such situations, well spotted and well documented cowgirl.

Nature , as always, continues to surprise us - and to your credit you captured one of these moments

Nature showed it true value or face, most birds are certainly opportunistic and nothing in Nature will go to waste! Extremely good photo! Ann

I have seen chickadees feding on both bird seeds and worms, so they are definitely not "vegetarians", but I have never seen them feeding on dead animal bodies, a precious documentation.

could be he is feeding on the little worms and small things that come on dead bodies, i just can't see these little ones as scavengers.

fantastic documentation shot.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Maybe Doux figured it out? Possibly frozen bugs & seeds were still attached to it, which would make sense since it had obviously been there awhile....wish I would have had the stomach to examine it more carefully! However, if I come across something like this again, I will definitely be more scientific about it and take a closer look!
