Thunderbird

This is a petroglyph carved into an dolomite outcropping about 50 miles southwest of St.Louis. Was made somewhere between 1000(ad) to 1600(ad). by members of Osage tribe who peopled the area then. Has been interepereted as "Talking Thunderbird", voice manifesting as lightning bolt that eminates as line off wing at right. Glyphs are subjective in interpertation as symbols are not part of an alphabet. Is suggested that they ask for prosperity & rain, not just for people but all of earths denizens. Other glyphs close by depict remarkedly "swift" like birds. Still others showing turkey and those birds tracks. Birds were much a part of their lives.

Its amazing how many ancient cultures were influenced by the majesty and the beauty of birds. Great capture.

Excellent picture of this petroglyph. I really enjoy visiting petroglyph sites, at least you take away from ones visit an appreciation of what things they valued. Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks for looking in, All. Wonderful thought, EW. Been there many times, this last was especially emotionally provocative. Then as now, humanity looks to the heavens for the supplication of rain. With birds as our intermediary.
