Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata)

I'm not usually a great duck-fan but I'd make an exception for these absolutely amazing ducks of fast-flowing Andean rivers and streams when you watch them seemingly effortlessly swimming upstream in even the strongest currents.

This is the female of the pair that have been seen by many on the river by Guango Lodge (Napo/Ecuador) and I imagine they are relatively used to seeing humans as with care you can approach them relatively closely. I spent an hour or so watching this pair both resting on the rocks and interacting (mating!) mid-stream. A real highlight of this trip.
