I need some help on this one. It was in the Okavanga delta, stealing scraps of meat from a lion's breakfast...brave or what?
I spent a lot of time on this but can't seem to get a good match.

Marvelous action photo of this splendid eagle, Gerry, top class, many tfs!!
I remember from many years ago in Zambia, the difficulties in separating the resident tawny eagles with the wintering steppe eagles (which were at that time still considerd conspecific though). One of the best criteria to distinguish was the extent of the gape which in the case of steppe eagle goes well beyond the middle of the eye. From the photo this seems to be the case, but maybe you have some closer captures.

What a wonderful action capture this is Gerry. A magnificent raptor too.

Many thanks for showing him to us lad. I've added the scientific name to the picture details, now it appears you have had the bird identified. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks for the id JJ and Volker, and everyone else for your comments. Thanks Delia for updating.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.
