Ural Owl (Strix uralensis)

These giant things wax and wane in numbers each year. Some years they can be seen every 1/2 mile sitting in low branches overlooking fields, and other years (like this one) they appear to have disappeared. They are very active in the day time and around dusk (unlike what the wikipedia entry says about them being nocturnal...). Kits, it was just a fluke - the Canon's concept of autofocus is to randomly chose a focal point in space and time and hope for the best. Big black wild boar in the middle of a green field? Go with a blade of grass 20 feet in front of it and to its right...
