We originally identified this as the larger and bulkier Streaked Flycatcher (Myiodynastes maculatus) which is fairly common in the area. However the identification has been corrected by Daniel Lane, Andy Kratter and Rich Hoyer as a Variegated Flycatcher. In addition to the difference in shape and bulk, this bird doesn't have the bull-headed, large billed look of a Myiodynastes. The streaking below seems too diffuse, the undertail coverts are only faintly marked, and the tail shows no rufous. While Streaked Flycatcher breeds in Peru, Variegated occurs only as an Austral migrant. This is presumably the migratory nominate race.
