É uma ave charadriiforme da família Scolopacidae. Mede de 21 a 26cm. Peito e crisso brancos, Cabeça e costas variando do preto ao alaranjado sem forma definida. Pernas alaranjadas. Possui uma plumagem que varia de acordo com seu período reprodutivo.
